Microsoft Preparing Release Of Social Bookmarks
However this new product turns out, Microsoft at least deserves a hand for not making its name irrelevant or unwieldy. As for the turning-out part, Social Bookmarks should be shown off for the first time this week.
"[W]e will release a preview version of Social Bookmarks for both MSDN and TechNet and showcase it at TechEd North America the following week," wrote John Martin, the Lead Evangelist for Server & Tools Online at Microsoft, in a blog post.
The preview version will allow people "to Bookmark any URL on the web . . . Apply tags . . . [and] Save bookmarks in the new My Bookmarks tool," he promised.
Martin's screenshots don't display anything revolutionary-looking; Social Bookmarks may have a tough time making headway against more-established competitors. Still, Matthew Sparkes writes, "such a site could generate advertising revenue for the company, as well as collecting tag data which could be used to make web searches more accurate."
Social Bookmarks should help round out Microsoft's little ecosystem of products, too, and there's no telling how its easy-to-remember name might be favored over things with two periods or an odd number of "G"s.
