1. create a new document, make sure it's big enough to work on and hit "d" to reset your colors. select the custom shape tool from the tool bar and then select the hexagon shape from the custom shape picker. draw a hexagon in the center of your document (press shift while drawing)
2. the next step doesn't require much explanation, just copy your shapes and position them like i have
when you're finished, remove the center hexagon
3. go to the layers palette. you should have six hexagon shapes and a background layer. link all the hexagon shapes together and hit ctrl+e or chose merge linked from the layer palette menu
4. now copy the merged hexagons twice and position them like i have. if you have trouble positioning them, you can decrease the opacity of a layer. This will make it easier to make the layers overlap eachother
5. link all the new layers and merge them as i explained in step 3 by pressing ctrl+e. be sure to leave the background layer intact. now you have two layers. select the elliptical marquee tool and draw a similar selection like mine
next up is edit > copy merged or shift + ctrl + v.
hit ctrl + v to paste.
photoshop will automatically paste it on a new layer. delete the original
hexagon layer, we don't need it anymore.
now invert the colors of your image by hitting ctrl+i
6. select your layer with the football on and go to filter > distort > spherize. chose mode "normal" and amount "100 %"
7. next up are the finishing touches. open the blending options window.
8. here's the final result:
