40s Style Photograph

This tutorial will show you how you can easily turn modern colored photos to monotone 40s style photographs like our sample below:

40s Style Photograph Tutorial: Final Result

Step 1 : Once you've opened your photo, create a new document well over the size of the photograph. My original photo is 370x229, so I create a new 800x600 pixel document. (ctrl+n -> enter 800 and 600)

Step 2 : Press D to reset your foreground/background colors to black&white. Go to Filter>Render>Clouds, then Filter>Render>Fibres. Enter the variance and strength. Mine is 2 and 50

Step 3 : Using Hue/Saturation (ctrl +u), change the color balance by choosing the colorize option then change the hue and saturation.

Step 4 : Now drag your photograph onto the new document that you have been working on. Using magic wand, select the area outside the picture.

Step 5 : Go to Select>Feather>45. Then press the delete button a few times until the picture is no longer has a hard edge,

Step 6 : Deselect it. Now, adjust the color balance of your picture using hue/saturation (ctrl +u). Tick the colorize option and change the hue/saturation and lightness value.

Step 7 : Copy your background layer, put your background copy layer above your photo layer, and fill the background with white.

Step 8 : Change the background copy layer mode to soft light, crop, then add a little bit of noise to your photograph (filter>noise>add noise)
