Black, White and Colour Photograph

Creating a black white and colour photograph is a great way to add drama to a photograph. In this tutorial you will learn how to use the Hue/Saturation tool to make the image black and white with one colour.


image 1 1. Open the image for editing. For this tutorial, select an image with a dominant colour.

image 2 2. Duplicate the "Background" layer (Ctrl+J). 

image 3 3. Using the Hue/Saturation tool (Ctrl+U), set the "Saturation" to "-100". Click OK.

image 4 4. Duplicate the "Background" layer (Ctrl+J).

image 5 5. Use the Apply Image tool (Image> Apply Image) to apply the following properties:

Source: Filename
Layer: Merged
Channel: RGB
Invert: Unchecked

Blending: Normal
Opacity: 100%
Preserve Transparency: Unchecked
Mask: Checked
Layer: Layer 1
Channel: Gray
Invert: Checked

Click OK.


image 6 6. Delete "Layer 1" and set the "Background copy" layer's blending mode to "Overlay".

image 7 7. Use the Hue/Saturation tool (Ctrl+U) to adjust the "Hue". Adjust the Hue until only one colour is present. For this image the colour is yellow.

Black, White and Colour Photograph Tutorial: Final Result 8. To increase the effect, duplicate the "Background copy" layer. Rollover the image on the left of this step to see the original image before this technique was applied.
