Simple Pattern Tutorial

1. Ok, if you are going to do this tutorial, I suppose you have knowledge on how to create patterns.
This pattern that we are making, is like small screws sticking out of the image. This pattern has a center, and it drops shadows. So what you are going to do is to create a new document (9x9px) and create a new layer. Select your pencil tool, 1 px, and in the center of the image, create a 1px square with this color (#000000). And please remember the images are like 1000% they're original size to show you how it works out!

2. Now we are creating the shadow which the thing drops. The shadow will be concentrated on the lower left, assuming light is coming from upper right. Remember the shadow is not as dark as the object! The shadow is slightly darker than the background. In our case, that's a gray color. Create a gray square to the lower right of the black square like I did below.

3. The object does not only drop shadow at one place, the shadow is a little lighter on the bottom and on the right side of the black square. The color to the upper right and the bottom left is even lighter than that, the color of the top is even lighter than that, and the color to the upper left of the black square is the lightest!

4. Now save your file as a pattern and open an image. I used a 88x31 button as an example and put on the pattern in a new layer. Right now it looks ugly, so move on to next step and finish this off!

5. We have, in some cases, to change the layer with the pattern layer style thingy to Multiply or Color Burn to get the results we want!
Remeber you can use any type of patterns to get just the result that suits you best! Good luck!
