Step 1: Open a new document, and select the rectangle marquee tool. Draw a medium sized bar like the one in the example, filling it with colour. (I used #999999)

Step 1 : Start with a new file 300x300, white bg. Set your fg and bg colours to default ( press D)

Step 3 : Now go to Filter > Pixelate > Crystallize and choose any size - preferably a larger size (70-220)...

Step 2 : Now making sure you press 'd', paint the BG in black
Step 3 : Now go to filter > reticulation (set level 25 for all the options)...

Step 1 - Make a new canvas size 300 X 300 and select an orange color - I have used color "#FF8400" as the foreground color. Click the Background to make the background your chosen color
Step 2 - Go to Filter > Render > Mezzotint , and you will end up with a fire like background...

Step 3a : Now go to Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates and select "polar to rectangular"...

This is a very easy and simple tutorial to just add a nice and different affect to normal images. This works well with avatars and Sigs. So just give it a try :D
